He arrived at the Sanctuary in 2014, from Leme Zoo, in the countryside of São Paulo state, where he lived in an extremely precarious and small enclosure. Toto lived alone for many years after his companion passed away. During his childhood, Toto lived at Bwana Park Zoo, in Rio de Janeiro, which was closed down by Ibama due to evidence of animal abuse.
When he arrived at the Sanctuary, he was very apathetic and seemed to have no interest in anything, with no facial expressions or chimpanzee vocalizations. But when he saw and heard his neighbors, Toto began to behave in a manner typical of his species, adapting very well to his new life. After living with Margarete, with whom he had a great relationship, Toto had the opportunity to have a happy ending.
He passed away in 2017.
