Simon (Sam) Chimpanzee
He arrived at the Sanctuary in 2004, along with his partner Rakker. Both came from a zoo in the Netherlands.
Date of birth: 02/08/1990
Origin: Artis Zoo de Amsterdã (Holanda)
Sanctuary: Sorocaba, São Paulo/Brazil

Simon, who was kindly called by the nickname Sam, used to live at Artis Zoo Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. He arrived at the Great Apes Sanctuary of Sorocaba, São Paulo, Brazil in 2004, together with Rakker, who had a more difficult integration time at the zoo.

He was a little agitated, suspicious and very temperamental and there were times he preferred to remain more reserved. Nevertheless, he loved to play running when he was in a good mood. During the 20 years he lived at the sanctuary, he shared his routine with Rakker and a little with female Francis. He got along very well with both of them and respected Rakker’s traumas, being very good and patient with him. He was very admired by Francis, who was always looking for him.

He died on October 2nd, 2024.
