One of Margarete’s daughters, who was used for breeding in the commercial chimpanzee center that existed in southern Brazil. She arrived at the Sanctuary in 2004, coming from a circus in Minas Gerais.
She lived in the circus since her first months of life. She was humanized, wore girls’ clothes, slept in a bed with humans, played with dolls and dogs. She grew up, gained a lot of strength, and always showed a strong and anxious temperament. She also showed trauma from enclosed spaces and always slept in open areas.
Gil related well with Jango, who arrived at the Sanctuary a few weeks after her from another circus in Minas Gerais. Jango adored Gil, and she, who had never lived with another chimpanzee, welcomed him as her friend, and almost as her mother.
She passed away on 06/18/2006, victim of a heart attack – https://www.projetogap.org/en/news/gil-a-brazilian/
