Emílio was one of the chimpanzees born in the former commercial breeding facility that existed in Paraná, south of Brazil, and was rescued as a baby and transferred to the Sanctuary. The breeding facility was closed in 2000, and all the remaining chimpanzees, including Emílio, were relocated to the newly created facility in Sorocaba. He was fortunate to have found his way to the Sanctuary before being sold and exploited.
At the Sanctuary, he is famous for throwing dirt at “strange” people or when the tractor passes near his enclosure. He has his peculiar way of calling attention, which is by making kissing sounds repeatedly. He is also known as the “smiling” chimpanzee because he smiles when he sees people he knows and likes. Emílio is very affectionate, lovable, playful, and impulsive.
When he’s suspicious, he has the same look as his mother, Margarete. He is also famous for his photos and videos enjoying fruit snacks, as can be seen in the gallery.
