He spent a brief period at the Sanctuary in 2004 and was transferred back by determination in 2019. He worked in a circus when he was young and then lived for about 40 years at Sorocaba zoo, spending the last 8 years completely alone, after the death of his companion, Rita, in 2011.
Black was very sociable and didn’t like to be alone. At the Sanctuary, he lived with the chimpanzee Dolores in full harmony, completely adapted to his new life. He liked to walk around the entire enclosure, tunnels, and little houses. He loved to “watch” others’ lives and followed the daily routines of his neighbors, especially Gilberto’s family.
Black passed away on February 6, 2021, due to cardiorespiratory arrest.
