Dear Primate Supporter,
Bihati was saved from a failed sanctuary in the Democratic Republic of Congo six years ago. Well-intentioned foreigners started a sanctuary for primates but ran out of money and simply left the country, leaving the animals in cages. Bihati and other chimpanzees and monkeys were found in filthy conditions without enough food or water. When PASA learned about their suffering, we and some of our partner organizations rescued them from their nightmare.
Please make it possible to rescue more apes and monkeys from abuse and neglect.
J.A.C.K., a PASA member organization in D.R. Congo, offered to make space in their busy sanctuary to give lifelong care to Bihati and two other young chimpanzees. Other primates went to live at CRPL, another PASA member. The chimps were withdrawn, scared, malnourished, and dehydrated. Amazingly, after a few months of loving care with healthy food and veterinary treatment, they showed their true personalities – full of curiosity and love of life.
Tragically, Bihati recently became very sick. Although she was eating well, she has rapidly lost weight – more than 22 pounds (10 kg) in two months – which is horrible to see!
The staff of J.A.C.K. ran blood tests but the tests didn’t reveal the problem. They then rented portable X-ray and ultrasound machines and conducted more tests, which revealed that Bihati has an unknown problem in her lungs. Some vets from PASA’s network as well as several vets from around the world are urgently working to identify the problem.
Many African countries are plagued by political and economic instability. Sadly, this can have disastrous effects on animals as well as people. An election in D.R. Congo this year is causing growing political unrest and many people are worried that soon violence will erupt. Because of this as well as the country’s economic recession, a local bank which is J.A.C.K.’s most important sponsor just reduced their support by more than 60%. This is a huge blow to the wildlife center.
Bihati’s medical expenses are already around US$600, which is a huge amount for a wildlife center in Africa, and the costs will continue to rise. J.A.C.K. doesn’t know how they’ll be able to afford it, on top of the tremendous costs of lifetime care for 38 other chimps. Without your help, these medical expenses may soon put the welfare of Bihati’s 38 chimpanzee friends at risk!
Bihati needs you! Please donate today to give her urgently needed medical care.
