UN supports transfer of orangutans and chimpanzee to GAP Sanctuary in Brazil
posted in 21 Aug 2015

In letters sent to Argentina and Mexico, GRASP Project (Great Apes Survival Partnership), from the United Nations, coordinated by Doug Cress, supports the transfer of orangutans Sandra and Toto, who live respectively in the Buenos Aires Zoo and the Chapultepec Zoo (Mexico City), and Cecilia chimp, who lives in Mendoza Zoo in Argentina, for the Great Primates Sanctuary of Sorocaba, in Brazil, affiliated to GAP Project.

In the cases of Argentina, the great apes are represented by a request for Habeas Corpus, in a process that is being conducted by local NGO AFADA, to free them from isolated and precarious captivity. GRASP wrote letters to the Judges who are analyzing the cases. But the case of Toto is being negotiated by project GAP Mexico along with the direction of the zoo, and being covered by a major campaign which intensified after the death of Toto’s brother, Jambi, at the end of July. The letter from GRASP was directed to the direction of the Mexican zoo.

This support of a United Nations body, which fights for the survival of the species of Great Apes in the world, is a clear evidence that great apes should live in sanctuaries, when they cannot return to the wild.
