Two Mountain Gorillas have been killed by rebels in Congo
posted in 17 Jan 2007

There are only 700 Mountain Gorillas left in the world and 380 of them are in the wild, living in the volcanic region between Congo (Zaire), Rwanda and Uganda- Central Africa. Laurent Nkuanda, a renegade soldier, along with his group of rebels operates in the region known as Virunga National Park, an ecological touristy place. In the beginning of January, two silver back gorillas’ corpses were found in this area and it is believed they have been killed to serve as food to this group of rebels. The preservation organizations working in this area are very concerned about the situation over the fact they think more gorillas would had been killed and new ones can happen, if the internal situation in Zaire extends to this zone, free of conflicts until now.
