Toti: a millionaire’s caprice
posted in 28 Aug 2014

“I knew Toti two years ago, I met him at his home in Cordoba. I also know Alejandra Juarez and the work she has been doing as a representative of GAP Argentina.

Last week, traveling to southern Argentina, I came to see the Toti, visiting him in his new home in Bubalcó. It saddens me deeply to see him in the condition he is currently: in a small space, sad, without shading or enrichment. Same as many other beings in this private collection that more than a zoo, it seems to be a whim of a millionaire. Toti is very deteriorated physically, and it is easy to see for all who visit, paying the entry. He is almost fur less, product of stress and self-mutilation. But the most serious fact is not the lack of brilliant hair, but the psychological damage that he is suffering since he was moved to the south of the country. It is clear that the space he is living does not meet the needs of a chimpanzee, nor will the new space that is being built to him, with the same design of the current cage, only bigger and has a tree, and a small garden winter.

Clearly until Toti be transferred to a sanctuary, his life is in danger. Still, despite it look different, the problem here is not Toti, but the lack of understanding that whoever is caged there is a primitive person, an ancestor who has not yet reached the same human evolution. Our dear and famous Toti is nothing other than a close relative, another primate, a non-human person who has done nothing wrong to deserve such bad luck. Together with this report are photos of Toti in his present and future dungeon cage. From the bottom of my heart, I desire that justice be done and await that day with the illusion that Toti has survived this bad move some of our species has passed him.
