Simon is crying for help. He is locked in a cramped cage in a villager’s backyard in Guinea-Bissau. When people pass by, he stretches his small arm out between the bars, begging for someone to show him kindness. They ignore his suffering.

This chimpanzee is just 2 years old – only a baby – but he is totally alone in this world. He should be with his mother, riding on her back and learning how to live in the forest.

But Simon will never get to experience that. His mother and family were slaughtered for the horrific bushmeat trade, making him an orphan to be sold on the black market.

Now, instead of holding tightly onto his mother, he hugs himself for comfort. He doesn’t have a bed or blanket to lay on, so he sleeps on the cold cement floor. During the day, he paces back and forth in an empty cage, softly crying to be freed from his prison. It’s so noisy outside that no one hears him cry. His cage doesn’t even have water for him to drink.

Our partners in Guinea-Bissau were shocked to see the horrible conditions Simon is enduring, and we are doing everything in our power to help him. But Simon can’t survive in this tiny cage, lacking water, food, and companionship. He needs to be brought to a sanctuary as soon as possible, where he can live in a huge forest enclosure and be with other chimps. He is still young enough that he can be bonded with a surrogate mother.
