THE INSOLIT

Spanish legislators probably are not concerned with the bulls that die on the arenas of the country, but they have approved a pioneer law that defines that the simians hominides have their rights.

The Environmental Comission of the Parliament approved a resolution last week that recommends to the Government to support to the Great Ape Project (GAP), a 15-year-old international organization.

The group defends that the great primates, like gorillas and chimpanzees, deserve the right to life, that their freedom should not be taken away in an arbitrary way and that they have protection against torture, due to the genetic and behavioural similarity with the human beings.

President of the Internationl Project, Pedro Ynterian, celebrated the approval in Spain, considering it as an innovation.

According to this initiative, the Government is compelled to intercept any research that "hurts" the great primates. It also prohibits that they are used in circus or any other kind of exhibition aiming profits, but they still could be kept in zoos.
