Despite international bans on hunting chimpanzees, gorillas and bonobos, the illegal trade in these endangered primates continues with devastating effect in Africa.
Every day, the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance – PASA works to save the lives and the future of gorillas and chimpanzees, bonobos, drills and more, in 12 countries across the continent of Africa. PASA is the largest network of primate rescue centers in the continent and can not do its work without the generous support of people who believe these magnificent animals have a right to survive and thrive.
More than 2,400 apes and monkeys have already been rescued by PASA members, including 9 endangered species. Nearly 60 more chimpanzees go to the sanctuaries affiliated to PASA every year and it costs an average of $2,500 for each field rescue.
Conservation isn’t simple, but it works. PASA brokers cross-border rescues and provides training in veterinary care and community education. Members protect vast tracts of natural habitat and reintroduce endangered primates. PASA also engages governments and local communities alike in creating a safe future for all the primates of Africa.
