For years, in the municipality of Guardamar del Segura (Alicante), a farm with a zoological nucleus managed by private owners  maintains five Japanese monkeys. Until a few days ago, these animals were in very small, dirty cages, without any competent authority taking steps to transfer them to a suitable place.

Given the refusal of the authorities to make any move, members of the GAP Spain Project, Animalia Protección Animal and volunteers obtained the consent of the owners of the farm and transported the monkeys to larger cages as a palliative, but it is still an inadequate condition of captivity.

Even before the passivity of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment, Climate Change and Rural Development of Valencia, the organizations negotiated the transfer of the monkeys to a rescue center in the Netherlands, which made itself available to receive them. However, for this it is necessary to pay 50,000 euros, which the Ministry refused to pay.

For GAP and Animalia, this serious situation involving Japanese monkeys could be avoided if one or more endangered species recovery centers were set up in the country. Now they are on the death row and their situation is the sole responsibility of the Government.
