Snares kill chimpanzees

A CRUEL ENEMY

Hunters of
Uganda hide hundreds of snares in the forests to catch pigs, antelopes and other mammals. They are made of metal and wire and when the legs get stuck in them, it is very hard to get them free without external help. Sometimes primates chew their own limbs off in an attempt to break free.

The last chimpanzee that got trapped was Kigerere, who were a member of the group that survives at Kasokwa Reserve. Kigerere fought desperately to break free, his partners feed him during his agony, but he did not manage to get away and died due to man stupidity.

Jane Goodall Institute is launching a campaign to remove all those snares of the reserves where great primates live in order to put an end in the agony of 25% of the country chimpanzees, who end up getting trapped.
