Slave chimpanzees: “Love for Money?”
posted in 19 May 2010

In the main Picture of this article, a lady, “Jimmy’s owner”, gives a kiss in the chimpanzee as a demonstration of her love for him. However, it is a strange love. Jimmy lives imprisoned in a zoo cage by himself for years, isolated and the lady charges R$ 5 for those who whish to see him. During these years Jimmy has already raised more than R$ 1 million for this lady, not to mention official money donated to the maintenance of the zoo. And what did Jimmy win? Nothing.

In the first photo we see Catarina in a platform in a circus, with no helmet, before jumping 10 to 15 meters down in a risk performance which was used to attract audience. Catarina worked for 30 years for a circus’ owner family, used to go to children parties, participated of adds and worked in a circus. What did she win? Nothing.

In the next photo we can see Hulk, a blind chimpanzee (now he has his vision partially recovered at the sanctuary) who worked 30 years in circuses. When he became an adult, had his eyes burned with hot water, so that people could use him in adds. He worked in a soap opera, in adds and used to travel all over Brazil in itinerant animals expositions. In these events each photo taken with him were charged R$ 2. He raised millions for his “owners”. And what did he win? Nothing.

In the last photo we see Yuri, chimpanzee who worked more than 15 years in circuses. He used to work in the Death Globe, dressed like a motorbiker, and together with two humans he drove in high speed and with a lot of noise. He lived in a small cage, which caused him problems in the back. Today he is hunched. Yuri owners earned millions with his presentations. Yuri, what won? Nothing.

Catarina and Hulk live together, with no need to work and are free of slavery at GAP Sanctuary in Sorocaba. Yuri already lives integrated with two females and a baby, who he treats like a son, at Paraná Sanctuary. He does not need anymore to damage his ears with the noise of the bikers motors or to exposed to risk. Today he is free from slavery.

Jimmy is not yet. He continues to be exploited and R$ 5 is charged to see him imprisoned and alone. His life is at Brazilian Justice hands. A Habeas Corpus argues that he should be taken out of this slavery status, so he can live with his equals. Let’s pray for him!
