Simba and Chitara getting close

SOROCABA SANCTUARY

June 11, Valentines’ Day Eve. There was no better day for us to try that the two tigers of the sanctuary get closer.

We have been observing the tigers for a few days, but we did not know what would be their reaction. The situation indicated that Simba seemed not to have had contact with any other feline, while Chitara had already lived together with Zeus, the Lion.

In order to avoid surprises, the enclosure was parted in two. This allowed both to enter, but with no contact. Chitara took long to raise from her bedroom and after a few hours she got up and observed Simba through the door, and decided not to risk to get out.
Simba, on the other hand, walked from one side to the other restricted to a small area, although he had a lot of grass in front of him. This behavior makes it clear how bad a small area (like his 6 square meter cage) is for the welfare of animals. He is conditioned to this zig zag movement in a small space.

After a while, Chitara laid down on the door and started to emit growls. Then Simba left his “zig zag transe” and realized she was there. Typically of a feline behavior, he laid his head and, freezed, he kept on observing her. It seemed to be an aggressive attitude, but it debunked when Chitara emitted louder growls and intimidated Simba. In fear because of the noise emitted by his prospective girlfriend, he started to walk again in his space, but with a more defensive posture, with his body lower in a clear sign of intimidation.

It was not exactly what we were expecting to happen. After all, it would be interesting and important to them to live together. But the efforts will continue. In the next days, new attempts will be tried so that they get courage to decide if their relationship will be friendship or more.
