Rescue Joanna and Rikita

Every Day is a Living Nightmare

Every morning, Joanna awakes in the dark, damp corner of a cage in Angola. The floor of her prison is littered with old plastic bottles and trash that has collected over the years.

She stares out beyond the metal mesh of her cage at scenery that never changes. When people pass by, she shoves a desperate hand through the cage bars, begging for scraps of food or sips of water. She looks longingly at the trees that grow just beyond her prison – trees that she will never climb.

This is Joanna’s existence, hour after hour, day after day, year after year – locked in a barbaric cement cell for over 12 years.

Rikita is trapped too.

Her cage is just beyond Joanna’s, but they never see each other. Instead they are kept in isolation. Victims of the bushmeat crisis, Rikita and Joanna were just babies when their mothers were gunned down for meat. Both were sold as novelty pets. Now, too big to be handled, they are locked away in cages and never let out.

Over 17 Chimps Suffering

Right now, PASA – Pan African Sanctuaries Alliance is working to rescue Rikita and Joanna and bring them to sanctuary as soon as possible. They are two of over 17 chimpanzees that we are urgently trying to free from horrific situations.

Just like Rikita and Joanna, these other chimps have spent almost their entire lives as illegal pets with chains around their necks or in cramped, filthy cages, often suffering from malnutrition.

This is the biggest rescue operation we’ve ever undertaken, and we can’t do it without you. In addition to transportation costs, Rikita, Joanna and the other chimps will need medical treatment for the injuries and illnesses they suffer from. These animals desperately need your help now.

This is rescue a huge undertaking, but if we don’t save Joanna and Rikita, they will never know freedom. They will live the rest of their lives without ever climbing a tree, without ever feeling the sun on their skin or the grass at their feet. We cannot turn our backs on them now.

You are their only hope. Will you donate today to free them from this prison?
