Drill Ranch, a pioneering PASA member wildlife center in Nigeria, cares for over 500 extremely endangered drill monkeys and 31 chimpanzees. At best of times, providing excellent care to so many animals in such a difficult country is daunting.
Seven Enclosures Were Destroyed
A tragedy has laid waste to Drill Ranch. Two brutal rain and wind storms tore down dozens of huge trees at the sanctuary.
The enclosure fences that keep the wildlife safe from hunters’ guns were crushed. The veterinary clinic, the water supply for chimps, solar panels, and staff housing were also destroyed by fallen trees.
This is the greatest catastrophe in the history of Drill Ranch.
Five Drills Were Killed by Falling Trees
As soon as the storms ended, staff did everything they possibly could to ensure the safety of the animals. They worked through the night and into the next day to repair the fences and clear the road of fallen trees, so visitors could leave and supplies and equipment could be brought in.
Somehow, no humans were injured. But as the staff cleared the wreckage, they were heartbroken to find that five drill monkeys had been killed.
After clearing the roads, staff bought more machetes, fuel for chainsaws, and other supplies. They worked tirelessly for nine days to restore the enclosure fences. Fortunately, they were able to return the other animals to their enclosures.
