The Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA) will continue to stress the balance between conservation medicine and captive veterinary care at the PASA 2011 Veterinary Workshop, which will be staged November 14-18 in Uganda.

The workshop will convene veterinarians and primate healthcare workers from each of PASA’s 20 member sanctuaries along with facilitators, experts, and advisors from Europe and North America for a week of presentations and seminars. Although the workshop will begin with sessions in Entebbe, a site visit to the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Lake Victoria is also on the agenda.

The PASA 2011 Veterinary Workshop will also include a special break-out session conducted by the Gorilla Pathology Study Group (GPSG) Primate Pathology Workshop.

The PASA 2011 Veterinary Workshop will be the ninth annual gathering of primate healthcare specialists since PASA committed to its veterinary program in 2003. Previous workshops were staged in Uganda (2003), Congo (2004), Cameroon (2005 and 2007), Sierra Leone (2006), the Democratic Republic of Congo (2008), Kenya (2009), and South Africa (2010).

PASA’s veterinary healthcare programs are recognized as some of the most effective in Africa, and PASA produced its own veterinary manual in 2004 — in English and French — with a revised edition in 2009.
