PANISH PARLIAMENT REQUIRES THAT THE GOVERNMENT APPROVE GAP PROJECT
posted in 14 Jan 2009

Environment, Agriculture and Fishing Commission of Spanish Parliament asked to the Government Chief to recognize publicly the support to Great Ape Project (GAP) in Spain, as it was approved by the Deputies.

On June 25th 2008, this commission approved a motion that suggested that the Spanish Government should support Great Ape Project, its objectives and requirements, and also should modify whatever it was necessary in Spanish legislation so that the great primates\’ protection would be accomplished.

Until now, and it has already a past due of four months, Spanish Government has not pronounced officially. Considering this situation, the Deputies sent a new document to the Government with these questions: is the Government fulfilling the proposal about the support to Great Ape Project, as it had been required by Deputies Chamberω In case the answer is affirmative, what are the practical actions that the Government has been developing and which ones had been accomplishedω In case the answer is negative, why and when the Government has the intention to accomplish with the resolution signed by the Deputies Chamberω

The document was signed by Deputy Joan Herrera, member of Animal Rights Defense Parliament Association (APDDA), on behalf of Deputies Commission, in January 14th 2009.

According to Pedro Pozas Terrados, Executive Director of Great Ape Project Spain, " the important to GAP / PGS is that a Great Primates Law is approved as soon as possible, due to the critical conditions that a lot of them face in zoos, circus and with private owners, so that their rights would be respected."
