Your Excellency Mr. President,

A tragedy is about to happen if Your Excellency do not take providences to avoid it: 168 chimpanzees – our African common ancestors – who are at Alamogordo Primate Facility Centre (APF), New Mexico will be transferred to Southwest National Primate Research Center, Texas, in order to reactivate their use by your government’s NIH (National Institute of Health) as guinea pigs in invasive experiments, which consist on inoculation of lethal viruses, as the ones of hepatitis, cancer cells and other diseases that impact humanity.

Those chimpanzees have already suffered a lot during their lives and were practically retired. This reactivation is a cruel, absurd and non-human act and with no scientific base, as long as it is already proved that in the past there were no scientific breakthroughs with chimpanzees as guinea pigs of human diseases.

Your Excellency has in your blood African origin. Those chimpanzees were caught of their countries and families and were taken to United States in order to be used in medical experimentation on the 80’s and 90’s, when AIDS was rising. A lot of them died, some suffer from side effects and other survived. When they thought they were free of the torture from the past, they come back!

The Governor of New Mexico, Bill Richardson, declared for the public he was against this transference of the primates and requested Federal Government and NIH (which caught them on their African habitat and took them to the torture labs, which have a moral and ethical debt with them) to build a Sanctuary for definitive retirement or to support private organizations that own Sanctuaries to receive them.

GAP Project International, founded on the 90’s in United States by philosopher Peter Singer and a group of international scientists, defend the basic rights of great primates in the planet, among them the right of not being tortured or used in medical experimentation. Therefore, we beg for Your Excellency ,as a last resource, to avoid this new genocide, which Your Excellency and your government should not carry for history.

Now that Bill proposals to put an end in the use of these innocent and extraordinary beings in medical experimentation – which only enrich pharmacy companies that look for profit – are being discussed in the Congress and in Senate, it would be a contradiction to your government approve an initiative that, in few weeks more, will be buried by the majority of Congress men, who have already demonstrated they are in favor of the project:

We trust on Your Excellency. From Brazil, headquarters of GAP Project and surrounded by more than 80 chimpanzees rescued from circuses, zoos and from human insanity, we hope that your African roots and blood prevail and that Your Excellency listen to our and our brothers chimpanzees’, whom we represent, appeal.

Respectfully,

Dr. Pedro Alejandro Ynterian
President, GAP Project International
