New appeal for a Habeas Corpus to Toti in Argentina
posted in 04 Feb 2014

Lawyers and People for Animal Rights Association (AFADA, in Spanish ) has presented a new application for a Habeas Corpus to release chimpanzee Toti from where he was hidden from justice in Rio Negro , Argentina.

At the same time, Alejandra Juarez , on behalf of GAP Project , filed an appeal to the first Habeas Corpus , presented  in the city of Córdoba , which was denied . The appeal joins testimonies of scientists and specialists on of great apes, which is evidence that they are close to humans and must have legal personality, allowing them to have the right of Habeas Corpus.

The new Habeas Corpus by AFADA , in the city of Corrientes , was presented  last January 31. The legal instrument mentions that Toti is depressive, was placed in a cage and has his physical integrity at risk.

At the same time, advertising videos posted by the Zoo show Toti hairless,  which indicates that he is in a state of deep stress due to a sudden move to a place where he knows no one and has very little freedom of movement.

GAP Project Spain, through its director, Pedro Pozas Terrados , which provided many of the scientific evidence that Toti is a person and has the right to Habeas Corpus , insists that the concept of person is philosophical and both great apes and large cetaceans may be recognized as so, which would allow them access to Habeas Corpus and generally applies to human beings.
