Due to misunderstandings about the situation of Bubbles, a chimpanzee who used to owned by Michael Jackson, director of the sanctuary Centre of Great Primates (CGA), Patti Ragan, from Wauchula, Florida, published an official communication to the press, explaining the situation of Bubbles:
“Bubbles, the chimpanzee who used to be owned by Michael Jackson, is under the care of sanctuary CGA since 2005. When Bubbles grew up and was not controlled anymore, Michael Jackson delivered him to Bob Dunn, who used to be the singer’s animals trainer and had facilities in California that were home for a lot of animals. In 2005, Dunn retired and sent all his primates, including Bubbles, to the sanctuary in Florida.”
This sanctuary is a private organization that handles chimpanzees and orangutans. Nowadays it is home for 42 individuals. Like the majority of North-American sanctuaries, it depends on people’s donation to carry on. Patti Ragan asks for society to help her in the maintenance of their primates. She calculates that each great primates demands USD 16 thousand a year and life expectancy is over 50 years.
