Katai, the only orangutan in a Brazilian Sanctuary
posted in 07 Feb 2023

Meet beautiful Katai, who is turning 38 years old today! The female orangutan was born in 1985 in a German zoo and is hybrid Sumatra/Borneo. Since 2010 is a resident of the Great Apes Sanctuary of Anami Institute, in Paraná state, Brazil. She lived for 25 years in a precarious enclosure without conditions for a life with dignity in the zoo, and, to make things worse, lost her only partner.

When she arrived at the Sanctuary, she seemed very frightened and mistrustful, and had a phobia of being enclosed in a constraining environment. A trauma that seems to be irreversible.

With a lot of patience and dedication, Katai slowly learned to trust her caretakers and today displays a high level of security walking in her enclosure and interacting with her neighbors spider monkeys. Enrichment techniques were applied to push away the boredom of captivity and to stimulate movement.
