Jimmy: trial about the Habeas Corpus will take place on April

According to the latest report of Magistrate José Muiños Piñeiro Filho, relater of the Habeas Corpus act to free chimpanzee Jimmy of his unfair and lonely prision at Niterói zoo, the date defined by Rio de Janeiro Justice Tribunal for the trial is April 19.

It is worth remembering that the use of Habeas Corpus to free a primate of an unfair situation was decided together by a group of renowned lawyers and animal protection scientists of Brazil and other countries who believe that chimpanzees are very close to us, are intelligent and social, therefore must have basic rights that are not being respected in the case of Jimmy due to the prison status he is submitted for years, being kept in a small cage in a private zoo. The objective is to entertain the public and generate funds for the owner of the zoo.

Dr. Heron Santana, lawyer and Law professor of Bahia University, who directs this act, has already had success when he used the same law resource to free Suiça, a female chimpanzee who lived alone at Salvador zoo. Unfortunately Suiça died a few hours later the freedom of her Habeas Corpus was conceived.
