Jack Sanctuary: the 20th of PASA

Third in Comgo

In 2006 vandals entered Lububamshi Zoo, at Katanga Province, in Congo, and put fire at the facilities. In a small enclosure there were two young chimpanzees, who had been recently rescued by a French couple –  Franck Chantereau and his wife Roxane. They were initiating a sanctuary called Jack (Jeunes Animaus Confisques au Katanga).

Jak died burned and his partner, Touzo, had 80% of his body affected. PASA sent a veterinary and other support to treat him. But the efforts were not successfully and he died a few days after. That episode shocked deeply the couple, but the incident ended up reinforcing the relationship between PASA and the beginner sanctuary.

Today Jack Sanctuary is recognized as the third one affiliated to PASA in Congo and the 20th in África. Today the sanctuary has 36 orphan chimpanzees under its care.
