Ivory Coast: zoo abandoned by NGOs
posted in 29 Jun 2011

The alerts we have published in our website about the dramatic situation of Abdijan zoo, in Ivory Coast – where 39 animals literally starved to death due to the civil war – has not caused a very good reaction in big international NGOs that work in Africa.

WWF – very well known – has cop out arguing they “do not care of animals in captivity”, as captive animals, who are in this situation due to absurd actions of men, would not have the same rights as the ones in the wild. WWF develops a work at Tai National Park and could, at least, offer to help in the reintroduction of some animals in the wild in the park.

A report by Executive Director of GAP Project Spain, Pedro Pozas Terrados, with information send by our representative in Ivory Coast, Serge Soiret, indicates that the Government does not want to take the animals out of the zoo, as they think that showing the biodiversity of the country can be a way to help to protect it. But it does not have enough funds to keep the zoo open.

The delegation of GAP in France in divulging the report in French prepared by Ban Dagui Simone, which was the first alert made about the crisis faced by the zoo and the death of the animals. But few organization and not even French Government has been showing interest to collaborate to solve the problems of the animal in the former colony.

GAP Project continues to do call as much attention as possible to avoid that the zoo turns to be a cemetery for the biodiversity of the country.
