GAP Project Brazil/International deeply mourns the death on February 16 of Steven M. Wise, a lawyer and great defender of the rights of nonhuman animals, who worked to break the barrier of species beyond humanity.

“On behalf of the Great Ape Project International and all its delegations in Brazil, Spain, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Israel, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mexico, France and Portugal, we deeply regret the great loss suffered by the Nonhuman Rights Project due to the death of Steven M. Wise, a great person who fought for the defense of the rights of nonhumans, becoming a reference in the United States for the rights of great primates. He was a lawyer who always gave his life and work to defend those who cannot defend themselves, trying with his effective work to reach people’s hearts so that they see non-humans as beings with rights, with their own lives and feelings.

Our Organization, which fights with the same objectives as Steven, will always remember him and future generations will see that there were people who gave their work to break the species barrier.

Steven, rest in peace, you fought for a just cause and, in the universe where you are now, without a doubt, non-humans will always thank you for the helping hand you gave them with your heart.

Pedro Pozas Terrados, President of GAP Project International and Executive Director of GAP Project Spain
