GAP Project denounces German Zoo
posted in 11 Jun 2013

Schwaben Park Zoo is located 45 km northeast of the German city of Stuttgart. There, 44 chimpanzees are abused and tortured in up to three daily presentations of a circus show.

For 10 months, German NGO Animal Equality investigated this Circus / Zoo that belongs to Hudelmaier family, who founded it in 1972 and began to operate it six years later. The NGO made a report based on video recordings of more than eight hours and more than 350 photographs, which shows the chimps used, their bad physical condition, their behavior totally disturbed and the precarious areas they are kept in.

This Zoo is visited by more than 200,000 people annually and is in the tour of many travel agencies. The former director of the Zoo, veterinarian Jan Vermer, made, in September 2012, a report condemning the use of chimpanzees and the mistreatment that is committed against them at the German Zoo.

Of the existing 44 chimpanzees, 24 of them were born in the Zoo. After the birth of each of them, with the false justification that their mother did not accept them, they are removed from it and raised by humans in the Hudelmaier family home till they are one year old, when they are returned to the zoo to work in the circus show.

GAP Spain, supported by the excellent informative work of Animal Equality, made the complaint public throughout the German press, as well as for members of the diplomatic representation of Germany in Spain. A letter was also sent to German Minister of the Environment, as well as to the Committee on Petitions of the European Parliament, as long as the Zoo practices go against the rules of European Community.

GAP Project Spain also requires an action of the German authorities, condemning the Zoo for their circus activities and mistreatment of chimpanzees, and requests that the 44 chimpanzees are transferred to sanctuaries, where they can be treated decently, as great apes, who have a common ancestor with humans, deserve.

GAP Project International supports this action and asks everyone to send a regular or electronically mail to the German embassies in their countries, denouncing this Zoo and requesting to cease the torture of these 44 chimpanzees.
