In United States, Laufer found tigers in different kinds of place, such as the backyards of a pet shop, indentified a chimpanzee colony in the countryside, at the south of the city Saint Louis and found plastic bags full of Asian snakes in a old military base in Florida. There is illegal trade of chimpanzees through the internet and also auctions of every kind of animals, like zebras in Missouri State.
In his book, Lufer concludes that exotic animals do not need us and we should let them free, as forbidden creatures to live together with humans.
At the same time, an article of Veja Magazine (Brazil) this week about the reality of exotic pets shows the absurd of the trade of tamarins, lizards and every kind of macaws, with invoices and the “blessing” of Ibama (Brazilian Environmental Institute).
The conclusion is that legalization of exotic animals selling approved by Brazilian environmental authorities did not collaborate to repress the poaching of animals. Possibly it has even developed, as long as breeding centers – with no proper inspections – hide animals taken out of our forests and sell them for absurd prices to some people who, after a while, do not manage to keep them home and abandon them in the streets. Tamarins for R$ 2 to 4 thousand, lizards for R$ 800 and red macaws for R$ 6 to 8 thousand are the most evident example that some humans do not respect no one and even less the innocent creatures that hide in the woods from predators Homo Sapiens.
