Yesterday was the first day of the II International Congress of Bioethics and Animal Rights, in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. The opening solemnity counted with the presence of important local authorities, among them the president of Brazil Lawyers Organization of Bahia, who pointed the pioneering nature of the institution in creating the first sub commission on animal rights, linked to the environmental law commission.
International participation was also very important. Among the participants were David Cassuto, representing Pace University/USA, who talked about the current tendencies of animal and environmental Law, poiting the importance of the discussion of animals and the environment as individuals who have rights, not only objects; Dr. Carlos Maria Romeo Cassabona, from Deusto Bilbao University/Spain, who talked about bioethics and its perspective in contemporary society; and Pamela Frasch, from Lewis & Clark University/USA, who brought important information about trainings developed about animal rights and the increasing interest for the subject.
