Demand Sanctuary for Alamogordo Chimps

Right now, 26 chimpanzees remain imprisoned at the Alamogordo Primate Facility, where they endured years of cruel experimentation. Though the National Institutes of Health (“NIH”) ended invasive research on chimps almost a decade ago, these survivors have yet to experience the peace and sanctuary they deserve.

At the heart of this tragic situation is an unscrupulous relationship between the NIH and Charles River Laboratories, the world’s largest supplier of animals for research. The NIH pays Charles River to keep these chimps locked up — despite the fact that it would cost 2.5 times less to send them to sanctuary.

It’s sickening: the tax dollars are lining the pockets of Charles River while perpetuating the suffering of these innocent chimps. Public records reveal horrific neglect at Alamogordo, where, already as of 2010, 62 chimps had died, and two even perished from outright cruelty. Still, the NIH refuses to act. We need your voice to change this.

This issue is both a matter of ethics and a misuse of your money. The NIH’s 2025 budget is over $48 billion, yet they won’t spend even a fraction of that to retire the chimps as Congress has directed.

Tell NIH Director Dr. Monica Bertagnolli that enough is enough: these chimps deserve sanctuary. NOW.

Together, we can give the Alamogordo chimps the retirement they deserve, and we can hold the NIH accountable for its abuse of power. These chimps have suffered long enough.
