Cross River gorillas: less than 230 in the wild
posted in 21 Mar 2014

GAP Project Spain launched a worldwide warning of the imminent danger of the disappearance of the Cross River gorilla subspecies. It is estimated that there are less than 230 individuals in the wild on the border between Nigeria and Cameroon and that they may no longer exist in Nature.

Limbe Sanctuary ( Limbe Wildlife Center ), in Cameroon, with whom GAP Project Spain collaborates, has sent worrying reports with the degree of destruction of the habitat of gorillas, due to the deforestation for logging.

In his statement, Pedro Pozas, Executive Director of GAP Spain, mentions that these Gorillas of the Cross River region are on the border of both countries mentioned, inhabiting nine areas, five of them partially protected, covering an area of 12,000 square kilometers.

These areas are being fragmented as deforestation progresses, taking with it poachers and animal traffickers.

The statement also appeals to the United Nations and to African Nations communities not to allow the extinction of this important species of gorillas.
