Colombia prohibits animals in circuses
posted in 13 Jun 2013

On June 12th, the Colombian Senate approved in a plenary session a bill banning the use of animals in circuses of any kind.

With a society mobilization and participation of artists and personalities , Colombia joins Bolivia, Peru and Paraguay as a country that has adopted national legislation prohibiting the exploitation of animals by circuses.

The project, which must be sanctioned by the Colombian President, Juan Manuel Santos, in the coming days, gives a period of two years for the circuses to suit the Law and to give a destination for the animals.

In Brazil there are state and local laws in more than 70% of the country that ban circuses with animals, and a Federal Law, to cover the entire country, continues, for at least seven years, in Congress waiting for a final a vote.

The absurdity of all this is that the so-called Third World countries, or emerging, have the most advanced legislation to protect animal if they are compared to First World countries like  United States and a lot in Europe, where it is still allowed all sorts of abuse of animals in circuses.
