Note by GAP: Kanako was diagnosed with trisomy 22, Down Syndrome in chimpanzees, and lived her entire life in a facility that was used for pharmaceutical research in Japan. With the end of research on chimpanzees in the country, between the years 2007 and 2011, the facility became a sanctuary and is now managed by Kyoto University.
