SAVE THE CHIMPS SANCTUARY

Carmen arrived a few months ago at Save the Chimps Sanctuary, in Florida. She left behind a terrible history of torture and insanity. She had been caught in Africa when she was still a baby, maybe in 1972, and she was near 40 years old. In 1975 she entered at Holloman North-American Air Force Base, where she was used in medical experimentations and also as a reproducer. She gave birth to eight babies, whom she never raised. Five of them died and three are still alive: Axl, at Iberia Primates Center, and Donnie and Maggie, at Holloman Base.

As soon as she arrived at the sanctuary, Carmen was respected and received all the care by the keepers, just like the other one who also came from Coulston Foundation, at New México, and had been rescued by Dr. Carole Noon.

Carmen also won a daughter to have a chance to enjoy motherhood. Mel, a baby chimpanzee, saw her as a mother. When they met they immediately hug and stayed together. Mel took care of Carmen, because she had already suffered some heart attacks and was not in good health after all the barbarity committed against her in the past.

Carmen died suddenly on November 23, leaving her new daughter, Mel, inexplicable alone.
