SAVE THE CHIMPS SANCTUARY

Carlos was born in Africa more than four decades ago. On 2007 he walked on the grass and entered in his island, which today is called Carlos’ island, where he enjoyed his life for the last three years.

Carlos suffered several years of torture and his medical experimentation weakened heart did not resist. On March 5 he went to find his place in heaven. Carlos was a chimpanzee with strong personality and was extremely sacrificed in order for his resistance be tested. He lived for years in a place called “underground prison cell”, a terrible place at former Coulston Foundation, where he used to be submitted to medical experimentation.

The image of Carlos in “underground prison cell” was one of the most shocking that Dr. Carole Noon showed to the world, when she rescued and hosted him. She found him there and took him out there forever.

Carlos was a chimpanzee appreciated by the keepers, who liked to scare them after they meet and the fright turned to be fun. Despite he had suffered terrible pains and had being submitted to invasive treatments, he was also used for reproduction and generated several sons and daughters  Ana, Arnaldo, Daveeta, Gabe, Cerro, Seve and Worthy, who inherited the remarkable signs of their father: large head, good looking and a lot of charm.

Carlos was a symbol of the banishing of the torture centre and baby chimpanzees industry in the name of Medicine – Coulston Foundation, which was closed together with its concrete cages, isolated from the world.

Those who were lucky to know him will never be able to forget Carlos.
