Billy: 18 years old and two thousand kilos

CHIMFUNSHI, ZAMBIA

Billy is not a chimpanzee.
She is female hippo and was one of the first rescues done by Sheila Siddle in her life, in her farm on the countryside of Zambia, Africa east coast. One day Billy appeared lost after hunters had killed her mother. Sheila sheltered her. She entered the kitchen of her house daily to drink milk and eat fruits and vegetables offered to her. Today Billy weights two tons and will grow up yet.

Billy witnessed during these year her chimpanzees fellows arriving year by year, and some being born at the sanctuary, until the number of individuals reached more than one hundred. Billy never abandoned Sheila or the house. Now she can not enter the kitchen anymore, as long as she is taller then the door. But every morning she waits for the two baby bottle of milk, which Sheila offered her everyday, and the trays of fruits and vegetables. If she does not like the selection, she stands still leaned on the fence waiting for something more to be offered in the meal.

Before she gets back to her night walk, Billy gets more milk and food. Among the two meals, Billy chooses a place to sleep during the day and prepare to her night raids.

Billy is a symbol in the neighborhood. She is known as “ Chimfunshi Sacred Hippo” and dedicates part of her time to watch the activities developed by her adoptive mother, this admirable woman – Sheila Siddle – who has being an example for the world of how to face the challenges to maintain her sanctuary, the biggest one of Africa.
