Bazou: 16 years in a small cage
posted in 24 Mar 2010

In December a sixteen-year-old chimpanzee was rescued from very dreadful circumstances. He is called Bazou. Bazou spent most of his life in a small cage with a rope around his neck. Bazou was kept by the widow of an important man. Apparently the man had a special relationship with chimpanzees. The story goes that when he was a baby he was taken away to the forest by chimpanzees, but later he was returned by them. Therefore he wanted to have a chimpanzee in a cage. Bazou is much smaller than a normal adult chimpanzee as a result of malnourishment. He is showing a lot of abnormal behavior like hair plucking and strange movements. Bazou is now slowly being introduced to our chimpanzee group.
