BABY BONOBO DIES UNEXPECTADLY
posted in 04 Feb 2009

There is no more than 200 bonobos in zoos around the world and a little bit more than 50 in the unique bonobo sanctuary, the LOLA YA BONOBO, in Congo. Then, when a bonobo dies, it is a important loss in the conservation of the species, and it is even more serious when the death is of a 4 year old baby.

Kaleb was the youngest of the group of 11 bonobos that live in Jacksonville Zoo. Kaleb\’s mother had come from San Diego Zoo in 2003, where there is also a group of bonobos, and had given birth to her baby in May 9th 2004. His father, Bosomdjo, is an old resident of the Jacksonville Zoo. Kaleb was found unconscious at one clock in the afternoon of January 26th. The attempt to recover him back to life was not successful. The causes of the death have not been informed yet.
