Today International Orangutan Day is celebrated. But other than celebration for this no majestic and unique species, August 19th is an alert date about the danger status of orangutans in the wild.
It’s estimated that there are only 50.000 to 65.000 individuais in the forests of Indonesia and Malaysia, south of Asia, and that 2.000 to 3.000 animals are killed annually. The main threats to their survival are loss of habitat via deforestation, palm oil plantations and illegal hunting and pet trade.
