An unexpected birth

Kyewunyo Ngamba Island mini

While still recovering from floods in recent weeks and after the measures of emergencies that have been taken to prevent the destruction of its facilities, the Primate Sanctuary of Ngamba Island, in Africa, witnessed an unexpected birth: an adolescent female chimpanzee, called Kyewunyo, gave birth to a baby girl, even having an implanted contraceptive, which apparently did not work.
Kyewunyo did not know how to feed her baby and quickly a mother who was nursing another baby was brought, in order to teach the adolescent mother as she should treat her  unexpected daughter.
Last year, a similar case also happened when another teenager, Afrika, gave birth to a baby. In this particular case, the child had to be separated from his mother, since he had a fractured arm.
Now the plan is to integrate the two baby chimpanzees within the community. This is a delicate process, since adult males may not react well to input babies of other provenances. Hence the best tactic is to introduce the babies first with females and then with adult males, using the adult females as protective of babies.
