Alert of Primates Trafficking at Arabian Countries

PASA (Pan African Sanctuaries Alliance) produced a poster that is being distributed on the most important harbors of the Arabian world and that denounces the poaching of great primates originated from Africa and Indonesia. The poster, shown above, says “STOP KILLING AND SMUGGLING THESE ANIMALS” and has photos of each one of the great primates: chimpanzee, gorilla, orangutan and bonobo.

The poster alerts the citizens of the Arabian world that these beings are threatened to extinction and that taken them off their habitat is a crime. And this crime should be denounced to CITES Committee, to GRASP (a partnership movement for the survival of great primates, supported by UN), to Interpol and to any public agency that defends international order and rights.

It is estimated that about 25 chimpanzees and gorillas are taken from Africa through Egypt every year, so they can be sold as “pets”. According to PASA Executive Director, Doug Cress, “PASA is committed to put an end in this black market and to denounce all the illegal routes of animal smuggling on the Arabian world.”

On March 2009, a PASA mission visited Egypt and verified that the country did not wish to put an end on the poaching activities or to respect CITES’ rules, which, as a matter of fact, are signed by Egypt.
