We found Captain alone in a filthy wooden crate. When he was an infant, his “owners” bought him from the hunters who killed his mother. Then they confined him all alone to a tiny cage – for 11 years. We can’t imagine how much this chimp suffered as he spent the first decade of his life in complete isolation, but thanks to you, he was rescued. PASA-member Parc de la Lékédi in Gabon brought Captain to the safety of their sanctuary to begin his difficult road to recovery.

After so long imprisoned alone, Captain was deeply traumatized. When he saw other chimps for the first time in 11 years, he had no idea what to do. He became stressed and scared whenever other chimps were nearby and we worried that he would never recover from his confinement. However, staff at Parc de la Lékédi cared for him and gradually introduced him to his new friends, first Ibamba, and then two other rescued chimps. Slowly, he learned to overcome his fears and approach them. He began to groom them and socialize with them. Finally, Captain was no longer alone.

We are so pleased to tell you that Captain is now living happily with his new chimpanzee family. Instead of being alone in a cramped cage, he spends his days in the huge, forested enclosure at the sanctuary, surrounded by his friends. He is groomed by his companions, climbs trees, and takes naps with his new family.
