A fêmea de orangotango Mutia, achada acorrentada num esgoto. Sua espécie está ameaçada de extinção
Mutia, uma fêmea de orangotango de 17 anos, foi encontrada por uma ONG protetora dos animais no esgoto de uma fábrica de tecidos na cidade de Medan. Ela estava acorrentada e parecia doente. Na Indonésia, apesar de ilegal, é comum a posse de orangotangos de estimação. Outros dois que viviam na fábrica, segundo vizinhos, já haviam morrido. Os animais são capturados nas florestas tropicais das ilhas de Bornéu e Sumatra, seus últimos redutos naturais. Além da caça, a espécie enfrenta o desmatamento e o avanço da civilização. A população de orangotangos no mundo foi reduzida em 86% nos últimos 50 anos. Cientistas da ONU acreditam que a espécie estará totalmente extinta até 2012.

Mutia, a 17 year-old female orangutan, was found by an animal defense NGO inside the drain of a fabric industry at the city of Medan. She was chained and seemed to be ill. In spite of being considered illegal in the country, it’s common to have orangutans as pets in Indonesia. According to neighbors, other two who lived in the industry had died. The animals are caught in the tropical forests of Borneu and Sumatra, the last remained natural habitat of the species. Apart from hunting, the species faces deforestation and civilization growth. The orangutans’ population has been reduced in 86% in the last 50 years. ONU’s scientists believe that the species will be completely extinct by 2012.
