Dez novos bebês na Montanha dos Gorilas

26/01/2009: De acordo com autoridades da vida silvestre, o primeiro censo sobre a extremamente ameaçada espécie de gorilas da montanha realizado pelo Governo desde que os rebeldes tomaram a área mostrou que dez bebês nasceram nos últimos 16 meses.

O frágil habitat das montanhas da África central, área de ocorrência de alguns dos últimos gorilas das montanhas vivos, foi invadido em 2007 por rebeldes e soldados e transformado em uma zona de guerra.

Um acordo entre os rebeldes e a administração do Presidente Joseph Kaliba no ano passado abriu caminho para uma equipe que havia lutado voltar ao Parque Virunga. Num censo que durou oito semanas conduzido pela Autoridade Congolesa de Vida Selvagem e que terminou na semana passada, guardas-florestais descobriram que dez bebês gorilas tinham nascido desde agosto de 2007.

Alguns meses antes de os rebeldes tomarem a área pela primeira vez em 2007, 10 gorilas da montanha haviam sido mortos e os assassinos não foram identificados. Foi o ano mais sangrento para os primatas desde que a pesquisadora americana Dian Fossey começou pioneiramente a desenvolver trabalhos no Congo na década de 60, visando salvá-los.

Há apenas 720 gorilas da montanha em vida livre, segundo o Parque Nacional Virunga, com cerca de 380 deles vivendo na área de conservação dos vulcões de Virunga, que é dividida entre Congo, Ruanda e Uganda.

TEN NEW BABIES IN THE MOUNTAIN OF GORILLAS

January 26th 2009: According to wildlife officials, the first census of critically endangered mountain gorillas carried out by government authorities since rebels seized the area shows that 10 babies have been born in the last 16 months.

The fragile habitat in the Central African highlands, which is home to some of the world’s last remaining mountain gorillas, was overrun in 2007 by rebels and soldiers and transformed into an off-limits war zone.

A deal between the insurgents and President Joseph Kabila’s administration late last year paved the way for staff who had fled the fighting and rebel occupation to return to Virunga National Park. In an eight-week census conducted by the Congolese Wildlife Authority that ended last week, rangers found that 10 baby gorillas had been born since August 2007.

In the months before insurgents first seized the area in 2007, 10 mountain gorillas were killed by unidentified attackers. It was the apes’ bloodiest year on record since famed American researcher Dian Fossey first began working in Congo in the mid-1960s to save them.

There are only about 720 mountain gorillas left worldwide, according to Virunga National Park, with about 380 of those in the Virunga Volcanoes Conservation Area that is shared by Congo, Rwanda and Uganda.
